When Mall of America decided to offer free Wi-Fi for its 40 million annual guests, it turned to AmpThink to design, build and manage the high density wireless network.
Opened in 1992, the Mall of America is the second largest mall in terms of leasable space, the largest mall in the United States in terms of total floor area (including Nickelodeon Universe), and the twelfth largest in the world. The Mall of America has a gross area of 4,870,000 square feet, enough to fit seven Yankee Stadiums inside, with 2,500,000 square feet available as retail space.
The Wi-Fi network required more than 600 access points, 236,600 feet of CAT6 cable, and 7,920 feet of fiber optic cable to build.Since its deployment the network has supported 319,995 unique users and 793,750 total wireless sessions while handling more than 486 terabytes of data traffic. This volume of traffic exceeds the total amount of the last 5 Super Bowls, combined.
AmpThink and the Mall of America have continued working in partnership since W-Fi was deployed. This partnership includes various projects involved network data, analytics and guest experiences, all done with a single objective in mind: to help the Mall of American realize ROI from its investments in technology.
